Hey Rick,
I would definitely get the codes before you buy it. While I can't speck to
the Volvo exhaust codes I can tell you something I learned about Ford Escape
exhaust codes. Since the car in question is a '99 and an OBDII compliant
car this may be pertinent. On the Escape it will often give a code about
too much back pressure in the exhaust or the EGR circuit. While this may
just be a sensor it could also be plugged Catalytic converters. The Escape
has three of them, two are built into the exhaust manifolds and run $499 to
$699 each depending on where you buy them (Ebay, OEM...). On mine it turned
out to be a plugged orifice on the downstream side of the sensor for the EGR
valve. Took me a lot of time to trouble shoot, but my time is cheap.
Anyway it would be best to have the actual codes. If you take it for a test
drive, swing by an auto parts store and ask to borrow their code reader and
get the codes so you can research them. I'm sure you already know this, but
in our part of the state they read the codes as part of the emissions
testing. A car with emissions codes showing or freshly cleared codes will
not pass.

First the ignition "is jury rigged". I haven't seen it but I guess he means
the key ignition needs to be replaced, he said a mechanic quoted him $500
to replace it. I'm wondering how hard this could be to replace and couldn't

Second it's got the CEL with codes that "suggest transmission and exhaust
sensor work is needed".
The exterior and interior of the car are immaculate so it's the kind of
thing I don't mind spending a little on to bring it back to "normal". The
owner assures me it runs perfectly, but I'd take it through the paces
before buying.
We have owned Volvo's before and they have been great family cars, we need
to get out of our 14 MPG van RIGHT NOW with the price of gas going up and
my better half's predilection to giving everyone who asks a ride to where
ever they want to go...
So - any help on the issues I described or maybe just thoughts about this
sort of car, previously I've owned 122's and a 242 sedan so this would be a
much newer Volvo for me. I've heard this was the first year for computer
control on several systems and that makes me pause a bit.
