I think a big part of it is that it is so over-regulated now because of the
chemicals used. I can't imagine what some of these shops have to go through
to stay in business.

Plating is a dying art. Some still do it, but hardly any do it well.
It is
cheaper to get a crappy job done on a crappy piece of steel and
ship it across
an ocean than to make good old steel shiny and lustrous
again.
