I came across this chap who used to place two 2ft x 3ft x 2in concrete
paving slabs in the trunk of his car in winter to give additional weight and
traction over the drive wheels. Worked fine 'till he went down an ice
covered fairly steep hill where studs or chains were really needed. He slid
and stopped in the stone embankment at the bottom of the hill. The paving
slabs continued forwards at impact speed, slicing through the metal behind
the rear seat. As they were slicing through, the metalwork bent
sufficiently to lift the slabs so they went into and through his mother's
lower back. She was sat in the rear seat. Submitted a report to the
Coroner on that one.
Just a gentle word of warning, tie the weight down well. 50lb moving at an
impact speed - of say 30mph can provide a lot of pain!
