12 years ago?! i think fuel technology has changed a LITTLE bit in a decade. Bingo! That is EXACTLY my point. How perceptive of you. With a low-technology car (that ran quite well, by the way, right up to 235,000 miles when the original clutch finally started to slip), it still made that much difference between brands.
