HERE IT IS!!!! PilotRob@webtv.net wrote,

You've got a non-emissions 1275...so far, so good. OK....set points gap at .015
(or "dwell" at 60 degrees using a dwell meter).

The correct static timing is 7 degrees BTDC.

Of the timing marks available, the longest one (center) equals "0" degrees BTDC,
the next one over equal 5 degrees BTDT and the one beyond that equals 10 degrees
BTDC and so on.

There is a tiny "notch" on the crankshaft pulley and it is this "notch" which
must be placed more or less "squarely" between the 5 and 10 degree marks with #1
cylinder coming up for firing (compression stroke) during correct crankshaft
rotation (NOT backwards).

Do not attempt to set the timing by rotating the engine backwards towards
correct
placement of the crankshaft pulley "notch" between the 5 and 10 degree marks
(there will always be a little
"slop" internal to the engine and timing chain, so always set this going in the
"right" direction for normal engine rotation).

Do this with the spark plugs out and using pressure on the fan belt against the
pulleys to turn the engine in the proper direction 'till "marks" line up
properly.

Follow the Haynes or whatever manual you get regarding hookup of a 12 volt bulb
from dizzy to ground which will tell you when the circuit is "made" indicating
current flow between dizzy and #1 spark plug. (The bulb will "light".)

With ignition switch "on" and with the notch in the crankshaft pulley lined up
squarely between the 5 and 10 degree timing marks, rotate the distributor
CClockwise slightly, then slowly Clockwise 'till the 12 volt bulb just lites.
Here again, do not "set" going CClockwise ('til the light just goes out) but
only
Clockwise 'til the bulb just lights or "setting" will end up retarded a bit.

Tighten the distributor down (without overtightening - just to that point where
you can't rotate the dizzy easily by hand) and your done.

This will give you between 27 and 31 degrees of mechanical advance at 5,600 rpm.
Assuming the vacuum unit is functioning correctly, you will get an additional 6
degrees (more or less) under
light throttle cruise for fuel economy.

All other things being equal, it should now start on normal gasoline and run
decently once plugs are reinstalled and all hooked up, however.....

be advised the setting of timing is only one step in the tune-up process, of
course. :)

Best bet is to follow the normal tune-up process in the Haynes or Bentley
manual.
