My 1980 Spitfire was fun to drive, but not as much to
my taste as the Sprite. Many on the list will snub a
Spit completely, but I like them, especially the
interior, and wouldn't mind another someday (I got my
rust-free example for free - that's a good target
price for anyone who's looking ;-) ). I completely
rebuilt the suspension (to stock specifications,
albeit with gas shocks all around), and for "7/10ths"
driving it was fine. On the Blue Ridge Parkway at 50
MPH, it was a blast. Try to do something like racing
or autocrossing on a stock suspension - not nearly as
good as a Spridget. IMHO, too much unconstrained
stuff going on to have much confidence. The rear end,
despite some improvements over the Spitfire's
development, is just too squirrelly. The car also
felt "under-engined" compared to my Sprites, and it
was not as easy to steer the rear end with the
throttle on the Spit as it is with a Sprite. The
Sprite feels a lot more like a go-kart, which is fine
with me.
