Yo Dan (american salutation),
You have a lot of well-taken points. We have lots of high-performance
cars driven by low-performance drivers. Mind you, I'm not talking about
enthusiasts. A good many of those know how to drive a car to suit its
potential. A good many do not. To me, driving a car well is an art
form; be it a stodgy sedan or an agile sporty car.
In most states in the USA, 10 mph over the limit will get you a
ticket. In the western states, where it's a long way to anywhere the
cops are usually more lenient. I was running down I-5 in CA, 10 days
ago, at 75 mph in my B, in OD, and was being passed smartly by other
cars. When I stopped for gas, I asked the convenience store clerk how
fast one might run and get away with it. She said it was all according
to how the cops felt that day! I think that must go back to the "prima
facie" speed limits in CA, in days of yore. Perhaps the CHP still has
that attitude.
A B lister once wrote to me that many restored LBCs never get out of
town and as a result never see 4000 rpm. Hm, I can get it over 4K in
town without breaking the speed limit, can't you? Had a cop who wrote
me a ticket for "Display of Speed" once for revving it to 6K in two
gears in a 55 mph zone. He was running a radar trap and was pissed
that I shut it down at the limit and before he could get a reading. One
of the few I beat in court. (G)
With the above in mind, I wonder if the cops in the UK have all these
"catch all" laws that states, counties, cities and townships enact here
in the US to swell their coffers.
Cheers,
