I don't think it insignificant that new cars also have cats (no,no,no not 
THAT kind) and they emit a different kind of exhaust with often a dab of 
sulfuric acid.  I'm neither chemist or metallurgist, but the stock SS 
systems appeared at roughly the same time as catalytic converters. I'm sure 
someone can elucidate.
