Subject: Thermostat housing - Crossflow Radiator

Hi List,

I have just bought a new thermostat housing for my 69 Sprite that has a
crossflow radiator cooling system. The new housing while having the same
part number (12G 1902) is slightly different in a couple of respects. The
first difference is that the casting varies from my old housing in the exit
pipe - though this looks like it will improve the water flow (not that my
cooling system needs it).

The other difference is that the height of the areas that the studs pass
through is taller than on my old unit. This meant that I had to cut them
down to fit (didn't have any longer studs). I don't know if my old unit is
original, or whether myself or a PO cut them down over a decade ago (the
studs will most likely have come from an old Cooper S head).

The question then is what is the correct height for the area that the stud
passes through? My old housing has a heights of 15/16", 1" and 1 &1/16".

Thanks

I don't know why the casting is different but if the neck points in the
correct direction it should be fine. Unless anyone can demonstrate why not
to, I would replace the studs with 5/16 stainless bolts.
