there really is such a timing light, basically you set the needle at the
degree  advance you want and then watch the needle as it goes to zero. check
the rpm and if they are where they are supposed to be, then you're home free.
i've used such a unit and somehow it is easier to use and seems more precise.
no real reason, just seems that way, maybe because there is no mistake as to
where "0 deg" is on the scale.

Another seat of the pants way of timing practically any car of our vintage is
to advance until the idle begins to deteriorate and then back of until the RPM
drops by about 100. works real well, and if nothing else it gives you a good
starting point.
