Yes, the steel wheel casing and axle halfshafts and bearing hubs are
different. 

Believe it or don't, I was measuring the difference just last night.
Steel wheel axles
are approximately 1/2" longer *in the shaft* than wire wheel axles - of
course, the 
splined stubs make the wire wheel axles longer overall.
