Sounds like you or your friend need to buy one of Kas Kastner's books on 
Triumph
modifications.  He goes into various details on such modifications.  I 
think he has a
link to book purchases at http://www.kaskkastner.com

If my copies were handy, I'd look up the references, maybe later 
tonight.  But his books are
well worth having.
