Been there, done that.  Even with the hardtop on, my
Spit
will gradually take on water if I leave it outside in
the rain.
Water somehow gets into the wells behind the rear
wheels
and in the floorpans.  

If you have to leave you Spit outside fo rextended
periods,
you really ought to remove the rubber plugs in those
two locations.
