Did you check the oil level in the carbs?

Also you may need to look at the jet position.

Carb experts, I need help!

After more than a year of just looking at them I decided to have my carbs
rebushed. I was looking forward to not having to pull the choke out
anymore to accelerate briskly. The bushes are in and everything is clean
and tight and back on the car. Tonight I began to set them up and now the
problem:

The engine wont go below 1500 rpm. The front carb is pulling the piston off
the bridge about 1/8 inch while the rear piston is sitting on the bridge
(all at 1500rpm. Using the tube method, i ascertained that the front carb
is hissing a lot louder than the rear one. Both idle screws are barely
making contact. The linkages are loose. The carbs are tight with new
gaskets. No cracks in the intake manifold. I cannot see where I could have
such a large air leak affecting only tha rear carb.

The pistons are not binding... both raise and fall freely when i move their
respective throttle arms. The front one falls to the bridge when the car is
not running. The timing was OK before I started with the carbs. Could the
extra vacuum form the now not leaking shafts be affecting the timing so that
it idles fast? Compression was good last time I tested... within 5 lbs.

Anyone been in this situation? Anyone know what these symptoms mean or how
to diagnose further? I would sure appreciate the advice.

Thanks,
