Another possibility is a weak spark.  That would let you rev up nicely in 
the garage, but when you put it under load, the weak spark just isn't 
enough.  Condensor is the primary culprit, then ignition coil.

Coil should have 8-10 volts when running, a full 12 volts when cranking.

Condensor that is partially shorted could cause the weak spark as 
well.  Points, condensor and cap are cheap enough to be replaced anyways.
