In an effort to find out why my car was running so poorly, I removed the
exhaust
manifold and looked into the cat converter. What I saw was a bunch of loose
stuff, like pieces of a wasp nest, lying in the bottom. I could reach in
with a long
screwdriver and stir the stuff around or pull a loose chunk out with
needlenose pliers.
I have no idea what a cat should look like, but I'm guessing this is not
very healthy.
My questions are:
1 - Could this be a source of excessive backpressure explaining the poor
running and
excessive fuel consumption?
2 - I have my emissions test scheduled for this weekend. The standards for
a 1978
car are not particularly strict, but I will probably need at least a partial
scrub from the
converter. Is it likely to have any effect whatsoever in this condition?
3 - If pull the pieces out (after the emissions test), is this stuff
dangerous or toxic
in any way?
