Thank you all for the input.

Yes my car is an early Mk1 and is +ve earth. This may be part of the
problem.

Did some testing of the terminals over the weekend. I can either have the
fuel gauge working correctly or the temp guage. The both wont work together
properly.

The 'new' voltage regulator has 4 spade connectors. Two have a 'I' next to
them two have 'B' next to them.

I have two spade connectors with wires linked. Two green only cables
connect to one spade. The other wire is light and dark green. My wiring
diagram puts the light and dark green wire to the I marker. The other to
the B. Earthing appears to be by screwing to the body but in my case its
not really eathing.

This 'new' regulator did come from Rimmers and is designed for the Mk1 -
III. I believe that later in the Mk1 run the Spits changed to -ve earth.

Think I have accepted to live with the situation and leave the temp gauge as
the working one.
