James -

I use cigarette lighter fluid (naphtha??) to remove dried wax. The only
problem is that it will completely remove all wax from whatever it touches
so use it sparingly. I put a bit on a rag and wipe off the old dried wax.
Then as soon as the fluid has completely dried I rewax the area and buff
being sure not to leave any residue behind.

I've been using Zymol liquid wax with fantastic results.
