Dear James,
That price has to be for a complete strip-down, replace *everything*
that can possibly be replaced, and rebuild - and by a top-flight
specialist workshop at that. There is absolutely no way that this is
your cheapest option.
Second-hand 1500 engine, complete: say GBP200 (but I have seen them
offered for free)
Second-hand gearbox, complete: say GBP50
Fitting: DIY (GBP0); back-street garage (GBP200?); specialists
(GBP400+?)
I've not swapped an engine, but I've done a non-OD gearbox. There is
practically nothing to it - the only annoying part of the job is
removing and refitting all the interior trim. That gearbox cost me 50
quid, and is still running beautifully, a year later.
Don't despair, and don't even think about having a top-flight job done
on your car until you've got the money (or the time and skills to do it
yourself). You can get her fixed up so that she will be fine for the
next few years for a fraction of the price you've been quoted.
