Hi John,

When hot both the head and the studs will expand. The head will expand
in length width and height, except that the stress imposed by the bolts
may reduce the height expansion. Likewise both the length and width of
the bolts will expand, but in this case the stress on the bolts amy
encourage them to expand along their length. Thermal expansion of 3
dimensional objects is really complex, and depends on exact geometries,
so the nuts loosening slightly when hot is not entirely supprising (but
I agree sounds odd).

Cheers

One thing I am unsure on the 'retorquing when hot' thing is that
surely
the metal would have expanded so that when it cools down the nuts will
be
looser than if they were done up cold?
