Dan,

I believe the 4 was because it had 4 cylinders.  Of course, the later models
also have 4 cylinders, but I think the 4 was dropped to avoid confusion with
model numbers.

     I know I've read this before in a book, I forgot the answer and think it
would be of interest to a number of folks.  I have a '66 Spitfire with the
lettering on the boot lid saying  'Spitfire 4' and below that, 'Mk II'.
What was the reason for calling it a 'Spitfire 4' ?  It was dropped in the
Mk III models onward.
