I had something much like this years ago on a Lancia.  But it my case the
engine wouldn't rev higher than 3000 rpm.  Caused by failure of the
mechanical advance in the distributor.  If your engine revs freely up to
5000 or so then I'd guess its blocked exhaust, or drivetrain / brakes.
