Eric,
I just went through simlar problems on both of your questions.
Speedo. Having just replace speedo cables on both spits I can say that if
you push the cable on the back of the speedo it should catch nicely. If
you try to pull it off without pressing on the plastic catch lever and it
stays on then it is probably on all the way. If it comes off easily then
you didn't get it on all the way. If you want to be sure and your a mild
contortionist, then you can lay on your back with your head by the pedals
and your feet up by the headrest (looks funny but you can see a lot down
there). Be sure to bring a flash light with you, its no fun getting in and
out to get stuff. I was able to see the plastic catch (on the cable) grip
the ridge on the back of the speedo from this position.
To rule out the cable. Disconnect the cable and allow the car to roll. If
the cable rotates then it is probably a guage problem or the connection
between the two.
I had an almost identical problem with the blinkers. It did turn out to be
the hazard switch. It is very easy to take the switch apart and clean up
the contacts. Because you put in a different switch I would start there.
The whole blinker/hazard system feeds off the hazard switch.
