Chris,
I took a quick look at the MkIV schematic and the obvious answer (maybe
even the correct one?) is that there are two different contacts on the
solenoid (other than the starter and battery connections).  You may have
reversed the wires connected to two. One goes to the ignition switch,
the other goes to the coil.  try swapping thest two wires and see if
that corrects the problem.
