You need to separate the transmission from the engine first.  Take the tranny 
out of the car, leaving the torque converter bolted to
the flexplate.  Then you will be able to easily use a socket and ratchet to 
remove the bolts.

How do I get them off?

I'm unable to get a socket on them, and I can tell an open ended wrench would 
tear them up.  I started modifying a box wrench, but
there's not enough curve at the box end to clear the bellhousing.
