Again, thanks all for the replies. Just trying to extend the life of a car =
that needs a lot of electrical work that I cannot even begin to do myself.

Sandwiching it between the exhaust and a can will hammer it - not surprised=
 it fell apart! It'll be getting the vibration (relatively low frequency) a=
s well as the noise frequencies you were blocking - that energy had to go s=
omewhere...
