I thought these were invented as a way to incorporate a parking brake
function into a fully disc brake system. Basically a fully mechanical way
of activating the caliper. There have been other methods in the past but
all of them seem to suck. These have been around a long time, and the
degree of suckage has varied. My '86 Trans AM had this system, and it
actually was not too bad to work on. Of course it did not work very well as
a parking brake, but I had the auto, so I never really cared. Until the
shift linkage came loose and I could not get the car into park. That day
sucked a lot.
