Try a heat gun, or the solvent that is used to remove bathtub decals. 
The standard "test in a non-conspicuous place" warning applies.

Most of that kind of protective film is held on by static charge, so I 
wouldn't expect any adhesive to be present. Is it possible that the 
coating is actually a sealing coat that was not intended to be removed 
that is just deteriorating?
