I agree with BillG.  Just had a similar problem, except that I'm on 
city sewage.
One day I heard a strange noise in the house.  Went to investigate and found
the toilets were violently bubbling.  But I wasn't having any 
drainage problems.
This only happened once.  Then a couple of weeks later it happened again.
A couple of weeks after that, I found sewage backing up into the bath tub
and shower.

Called the plumber and a couple of hours later it was fixed.  They ran their
powered snake through the lines.  They said they had hit a couple of blockages.
