Year ago, in college, I needed to make weights for SCUBA diving.

I hit every service station and tire shop around and picked up about 100
pounds of old tire weights. Used my brother's welding torch to heat it
up in an old cast iron pot, and poured the molten lead into the weight
molds that the school had. I made a lot of people in the class happy
when they didn't have to buy weights for their SCUBA gear.

When melted, the "junk" floats to the top. I used an old ladle to scoop
off the impurities and leave the pure lead to pour into the molds. Very
easy to do.
