Is your mower blade built for bagging applications.  There are two different
blades depending if you are using a bagging attachment.  The blades for 
bagging
have a lift on the back side of the blade to lift the grass into air.

I have the same problem with my Deere if the grass is too tall (1.5" plus).  I
will ussually mow it with the bagging attachement off.  Then I will come back
and remow with the bagging attachment on, so basically vacumning the lawn.
