I want to install three single duplex outdoor outlets in three different
locations in my backyard. Two locations will be next to ponds to run the
pump. These are the small plastic ponds with the pumps that shoot the
water up or have a waterfall etc. The third location will be mounted to
the side of the house behind the new deck I'm building. This will just
be a general outlet for bug zappers or whatever. I will of course use
gfci receptacles with weather tight enclosures. The outlets will just be
sticking up out of the ground near the ponds.
I currently have a surface mount duplex outlet on the side of my house
for my rv to plug into. This is a dedicated 20 amp circuit. The rv takes
very little juice, mostly the converter to keep the house batteries
charged, and in the winter a small portable heater for three months out
of the year to keep it above freezing in there. I'm hoping to tap into
this circuit for the new outdoor outlets.
I consulted my handy dandy wiring book that I used 8 years ago when
wiring my shop but noticed it is based off of 1996 national code so
maybe it is outdated.
1. What type of conduit is used for this type of buried application?
When we ran power to my shop from the house we used some sort of gray
abs, pvc, xyz plastic stuff. Can I use this in this type of application?
Can you run regular 10/3 or 12/2 romex inside the gray stuff when it's
buried, or do I need special wire?
2. Anybody know what the code is for how deep I need to go with the
trench?
3. Should I use a gfci outlet at each location, or run in series and
just put a gfci on the original rv outlet (first in series) on the side
of the house? Or maybe a gfci 20amp breaker in the panel?
4. Do they make some sort of stake or stantion that is used to mount the
enclosure to when it comes up out of the ground? The two outlets for the
ponds will be kind of hidden back in the landscape but I assume they
need to be mounted to some sort of stake or something and not just
sticking up out of the ground with only the conduit holding them up?
