I've forgotten most of this stuff, but I think there's something wrong with
that number. The window A/C unit I just installed is rated for 14600
Btu/hr, which is about 1.2 ton (1 ton = 12,000 Btu/hr) and it only draws
1.36 kW according to the nameplate. Window units are typically less
efficient, so that aligns much better with the rule of thumb I remember,
which is that a ton is about 1 kW.
Don't have an LRA number handy, but I'd bet money it's not 5 times the
running current. Sucking 75 amps out of a household 110v outlet would have
to cause some serious side effects, like blinking lights.
Oh, and if it was that precise, it would not be a rule of thumb. Kind of
like saying "about a foot" is 304.80 mm.
