Hi Steve,

I spent 10 years in the sound reinforcement business so I had lots of
practice winding cables and the like. It's something that's even hard to
demonstrate while standing next to you but I'll try to write it down here.

1. get yourself a short piece of rope to practice.

2. make a loop as you normally would holding one end in your right hand and
bringing a length or rope around to the top with your left.

3. holding the first loop in your right hand bring your left hand down with
the palm facing away from you and grasp the next length of rope.

4. bring your left hand up to the top again while twisting it so your palm
now faces the ground, grasp the second loop with your right hand.

5. you will notice that the portion of rope still to be wound is now
underneath the second loop, this is the important bit. you can do the same
process while the rope is laying on the ground or over a hook on the wall.

6. repeat step 2 and steps 3/4 alternately until you have completed winding
your rope.

7. at this point the pattern of loops will be over/under/over/under......

8. you can test your work by grasping one end of the rope and throwing it,
it should un-coil smoothly without knots or kinks. this may not work with
previously kinked or knotted rope however.

9. the point of this excersize is to have your rope, cable, hose, or
whatever you need to unwind come out smoothly. imagine yourself clinging to
the side of a cliff having to pull up 200 ft of rope to remove a knot before
you can rapell down and use the privy....

10. practice. once you get it this will become second nature any you'll find
yourself re-winding all your friends extension cords because the "around the
elbow" method really bugs you.

Please don't ask me to explain it further, if the method I described doesn't
make sense try it with your garden hose laying on the ground or go find some
climbers to "hang" around with....

Cheers,

John Matthews
