wanted to say thanks to all for the phone help.

like someone suggested, the rjmumblemumble plug was in fact functioning as
both the in and out for the phone line. I found a wiring diagram for the
board in the box and traced the phone in/out lines back to the plug, then
to the smaller box downstream from the plug, then traced which wire was
which, etc. then I just put the tip in to the tip out, ring in to ring
out, and now I have a phone in the house again.

a question, though: what would possess someone to make that plug both the
in and out? that means that somewhere (behind the wall where you can't
get to/see it) that line has to be split open so the wire in can be
spliced and the wires out can be separately spliced as well. true, it
looks neat as far as the install goes, but why not just run the in and
out lines to the box separately? would seem more straightforward.

anyway, that's all academic--the phone works. thanks again, y'all
