 Aaaaahh!  Just after the first version of his FAQ came out, Bruce and I
butted heads several times over the issue of MTBE.  Bruce refused to
acknowlege "anecdotal evidence" that contradicted what his references.

 Good for Bruce, he fixed it.  And he's in good company, since the
California Air Resources Board and the US Environmental Protection
Agency have also backed off on their former "tertiary butyl ethers have
no drawbacks" party lines.
