Not sure it's relevant, but many years ago a friend of mine tried to clean
some bonded brake shoes in an industrial solvent.  It ruined the bond
between the linings and the shoes, the linings fell off ...

Also, at least some carb cleaner will soften and swell rubber brake
components.
