If you have taken a pipe fitting apart that has used the tape all you
see is string.  That string can get into things.  No problem with water,
but don't try this on an engine oiling system.  It makes a real
expensive mess tangled up on the pick-up screen.

The theory of the teflon tape is to reduce friction to allow you to
fully tighten the TAPERED pipe threads.  Pipe dope with teflon is the
way to go, because it will seal any incongruities in the threads and
allow you to fully tighten without the stringy things.
