I don't have an explanation that is "scientific", but here in AZ many
people coat their roofs with white paint or white rubberized compounds
instead of shingles,etc.  The common logic is that the white reflects
the heat away from the house.  I don't know that this logic is true, but
I do know that when I recoated my house a year ago, my cooling bill
dropped about 35%, recovering the cost of the coating in one month.  We
did the same in Kansas with flat roofs, only there we used aluminum
paint.  I didn't pay those bills so I can't verify any savings.
