You guys and girls need to put your thinking caps on and start noodling the
options......

Sun made some chassis dynos from the late 50s to the late 80's. Many were
sold to schools...... now with all the new emissions stuff on cars today all
those useless chassis dynos, distributor testers, 3 gas analyzers, growlers,
etc., can be had for a song. And I can't even carry a tune.
Useless on modern cars, perfect on old ones. Picked up a Sun emissions
analyzer at Hershey for $100, and a AMCO brake shoe arc grinder for $25 at a
local school auction. Looking at a Bear brake riviting machine for $200 with
LOTS of old linings, the good stuff, and tons of spares.
I now of a chassis dyno that can be had REAL cheap, may need some
refurbishment but that's not to much of a problem. Biggest expense is the
rollers. If my offer goes through on this property in Michigan (with the
detached 10 car brick building (aka museum), the other detached 6 car, 3
story brick building (aka shop), and I guess there's a house too...) I will
pick up the dyno.
Went to see a piece of property and I didn't even go into the house. After
all, it's just a place to eat and sleep.
Anyway, check out the local trade schools and some larger service garages,
not gas stations. You might get one free for moving out of their way.
Gee.... A home with your very own chassis dyno and engine cell. If that's not
being ready for Y2K I don't what is.
Running numbers:
Engine Dyno $3-5,000
Bridgeport $2500
Logan/South Bend $1500
Quincy 15HP 250 gal $750
Uni-Hone blasting cab $1000
Distributor tester $500
All equipment used but in good condition...... shop the auctions, drive
around to "likely" shops.
Not all that expensive when compared to the new crap that's out there, and
acquired over a number of years, it's not to big of a hit. The total comes to
about the depreciation on a 4 year old Lexus or Explorer, or my teenage son's
monthly CD expenditures for that matter....
