walnut shells have a long history of use in cleaning aluminum parts,
such as pistons,  they are fairly easily available in 50# bags
nationwide, and are biodegradable (if what you are blasting isn't too
grungy).  They also work in regular pressure blasters.  I am not sure
that plastic media  don't require a special gun and air supply.
Certainly for stripping paint off cars, plastic media blasting
requires a hefty investment in special equipment.
