At least for me, nine times out of ten I simply loosen the
two nuts that hold the tip into the gun and then retighten
them. The constant heating and cooling seems to cause
them to loosten up. Then they start to corrode. Then the
tip fails to heat.

Working the nut back and forth a little and making sure it's
tight improves the electrical connection at the junction,
making sure the energy makes it to the tip and is not
converted to heat by the high resistance of the bad
nut connection.
