Try any old piece of bubble wrap. It comes in various "gauges" and can
easily be changed when dirty or damaged.
(and your earlier question for rusty tools) - dunk them in Naval Jelly or
metal prep (which are basically phosphoric acid?). I don't get the problem
becuase I'm usually working on oily jobs and they're covered in a
protective film.

Anything I can that is a single point of failure. Save all those working
parts that you change in a routine service, wrap them up and hide them
somewhere in the car. Distributor rotor, distributor cap, coil (rarely
fails), coil to distributor lead, toothed camshaft belt, axle
(half) shaft which modern cars never seem to break but old MGs do for a
pastime. (no, old MGs don't have toothed camshaft belts, but modern cars
do). Spare fuses. A tow rope is a good substitute for the part you havn't
got.
