The 1 hp motor won't give you the capacity you will need especially for sand
blasting.  You should problbly have at least a 3 hp.  The speed of the
compressor is critical to the output.  You will have to know what the
manufacturer  recommended as far as speed and output.  Running a small
compressor too fast will eat up the valves and cause it to overheat.

I have a 2 cyl. Quincy that I put a 3 hp 220 volt motor on to replace a 1 hp
110 volt motor.  I almost doubled the size of the motor pully.  It is
pressure lubricated and has hydraulic unloaders.  It handles all my hobby
and shop needs including a sand-blast cabnet.  I've had no problems with it
in 4 years.
