I'm back with more issues with my 235 in the 53 3100.
I decided to put in a temporary gas gauge and idiot lights while I
decide which set of gauge/speedo I'm going to install. I can't find a
temp sender that fits the hole in the 235 head. It seems to be a thread
size that is slightly smaller than 3/8 pipe. In addition it seems to
have some type of machining at the bottom of the hole that serves to
clamp down the heat pipe for the gauge. The truck had an inoperative
under-dash temp gauge whose heat pipe fit the hole. Can anyone shed any
light on this?
The previous owner (one of them anyway) installed the 235. They did not
alter the radiator mounting, but they installed half of the stock fan
and flattened the blades for clearance. I'm trying to figure out if
they installed the short water pump, and if so, what fan should I put on
it? The pump measures about 4 1/4" from the block to the front of the
flange. Can someone tell me if this is the short or the long pump for
the 235?. I understand that the short pump uses a standard small block
pulley, but the vendors catalogs always seem to say something like "must
use later model fan". What do they mean? What year, make, and model
are they talking about?
I had hoped to discuss these problems with some vendors at the Pate swap
meet this last weekend, but the rain made everybody leave early.
