I've found the clicking noise to be very usual with external solenoid
type starters. There is just enough juice to cause the electro magnet in
the solenoid to pull in, but as soon as the main contacts make, the
extra draw to start the motor grinding is enough to drop the relay out
again.

Usually if the starter does grind slowly, the next time you try it will
just give you clicks.


I guess I've lived with low batteries in many cars for a long time.
