I had a bitch of a time getting my valve cover gasket to seal. I learned
two tricks in the process:

1) pre soak the cork gasket in oil.

2) A permatex goo called "the right stuff. I glued the gasket to
the valve cover, but not the head. The right stuff is thick enough
that it helped take up space where I was having problems. It can
also be used instead of a cork gasket rather than as just a suplement.

Rome did not create a great empire by having meetings; they did it by
killing all those who opposed them.
