There was a time when drivers actually put a sort of rubber diaper on their
vehicles to drive the Alcan to keep the under carriage from taking too many
rock whacks...

The terrain (permafrost) and the length of the highway prevent interstate
status. In the summer, there always be ice heaves, tantamount to a BIG
pothole, to cause some nasty damage if one isn't being very careful. After
you see your first ice heave, you'll learn quickly how to spot the next
ones!! <g>
