Hi Mike,
   What a frustrating problem.  Most pumps don't lose prime when changing
the conversion filter, yet that happens to you regularly.
   Have you tried filling the filter with fresh oil before screwing it
on?
   Is there a prime plug on the top of your pump? 
   An idea, that I've never had to try,  disconnect the oil gauge flex
line and pull a vacuum on it until oil appears....
