Unless you are fanatical about originality, I'd install an electronic
system - as on later Lotus'.
This will also give you a headlamp flashing system that can be a boon when
you are 'pushing' along to warn other roadusers that you are there or coming
through!

Spent some time friday working on a right hand drive Elan that a local

Too bad the vacuum operated headlight pods don't pop up like they should.
